Kalimbassieris Maritime Piraeus office initiated a series of in-house seminars addressed to the local insurance and maritime community. The first presentation on “Bunkering Procedures and Fuel Management Problems” was given by our Technical Director, Dimitrios V. Giannakouros, on 29th March 2017 at Kalimbassieris’ Akti Miaouli offices and was attended by a number of claims handlers from the P&I Club’s local offices.

Amongst other, the presentation covered the new edition of ISO8217 standard on the requirements for petroleum fuels for use in marine diesel engines and boilers, prior to appropriate treatment before use, which became available on 19th March 2017 and introduced various changes to the specifications for distillate fuels. Particular emphasis was given on the interpretation of test results, with the implementation of ISO 4259:2006, on the determination and application of precision data in relation to methods of test.

During the presentation, the claims handlers exchanged views and shared their experience on claims arising out of use of off-spec bunkers. An interesting point was the comparative examination of Charterparty and Bunkering contracts and the differences these documents present with the quantity determination and the sampling procedure during bunkering.
